Your Neck Compression Index rating (NCi) is the
amount of pressure/weight you are applying to your
pillow, and if your pillow does not match that pressure
with its height and support it will force your neck and
shoulder muscles to over contract, causing you to toss
and turn trying to relieve the pressure and interrupting
your sleeping pattern.
Your neck compression index is calculated using the
following four critical factors that help make up a
comfortable sleeping position.
How You Sleep
The way you sleep is critical in developing a
sound sleeping pattern. Do you sleep on your back
or side. Sleeping habits are just that? Do you
know the right way sleep (see our Sleeping
Hints page)
|
Your Weight
Your weight has a big influence on the amount
of support your pillow needs to give you to allow
your Shoulder and neck muscles to relax. Weight
changes of 10 kilos loss or gain can vary the
support your pillow needs to give your neck and
shoulder muscles.

|
Your Build
Your shoulder width should determine the actual
height of your pillow in relationship to your bed.
If your pillow is too low your neck will get no
support and if your pillow is too high your neck
will be forced to tilt up. Both these positions
will lead to strain on your neck muscle causing
you to toss interrupting your sleep. Changes in
height of 80 to 100 mm will also change you NCi
rating and support your pillow needs to give you.
|
YOUR BED
The type of bed you sleep on will also vary the
height and support your pillow needs to give you.
On a firm bed you will sleep higher e.g. your
shoulder width will need to match your pillow
height, on a softer bed your shoulder will sink in
slightly more reducing your pillow height.

The Result
Using our unique patented Neck Compression Index, we
consider all factors including your type of bed, your
build, your head and neck height when creating your new
Pillow Made To Measure. The result is a pillow that will
suit you with the correct and ideal neck support.
For example: your NCi Rating may be NCi 4/150, -
this means that you need a pillow support of 4 for your
weight with a shoulder width of 150mm to get the ideal
support for your neck and shoulders.
